Feature Request: Smarter Local File Importing & Duplicate Prevention via Metadata#4232

T

I am submitting a feature request to fix the current limitations of the local file import system when recovering or migrating clip libraries.

Currently, if a user moves drives or has their local ‘clips.json’ database cleared, Medal goes completely blind to existing raw .mp4 files on the hard drive—even when pointing the app to the correct directory and taking new clips in the exact same path.

When trying to manually re-import these folders to restore the library, two major issues occur:

  1. NO DUPLICATE DETECTION: Medal’s importer does not scan basic file metadata (recording date, time stamp, and file size). This results in massive timeline duplication if a user tries to bulk-import a directory that contains a mix of already-synced cloud clips and untracked local files.
  2. LOSS OF METADATA & GAME CATEGORIES: Manually imported files completely lose their game types (e.g., Roblox, Valorant, Minecraft) and land in a generic, unorganized pile under raw string names (MedalTV…).

REQUESTED FEATURES:

  • Implement a smart duplicate checker that matches the filename or recording timestamp against items already tracked on the user’s timeline to automatically skip duplicates.
  • Allow Medal’s engine to read its own native filename structures (e.g., MedalTVValorant20260531…) to automatically rebuild the correct Game Categories and basic titles during a local folder scan.

This would completely solve library recovery headaches for long-time users who have hundreds of gigabytes of history!
