I wanted to highlight how valuable this feature was for users who do full session recordings, along with a few examples of situations where it’s been extremely beneficial for myself and others using similar gaming platforms.
With one button, you could:
This setup worked perfectly. There’s no real conflict with having both functions available—especially since users could simply disable one binding to use the other as preferred.
I record full sessions. My gaming sessions typically last 1–6 hours, broken up into 10–30 minute matches (don’t judge). My workflow used to look like this:
Before the update that removed the ability to see highlights by hovering over VODs in the library, I would review my recordings from the past week by quickly scrolling through thumbnails. Any VODs that showed highlights, I’d clip; those that didn’t, I’d delete. It was an amazing workflow—simple, efficient, and something few other platforms offered.
Addtionally I am forced to get quick clips for things sometimes due to player reports and the amount of cheating that occurs on a game I play. Having the long press, tabbing out, snagging a clip fast, and uploading it to a ticket is incredible. What is more incredible is doing it with one button.
Even when I forgot to long press and ended up with a single 3-hour VOD, the system was forgiving. I lost nothing but a bit of time to go back and clip through the one full session vod. And for players like me who use 60% keyboards (common among competitive shooter players), available keys are already limited. Games like GTA V (FiveM) and Arma Reforger eat up a lot of binds, so losing this dual-function feature really hurts.
I appreciate the addition of your new separate keybind, but please bring back the ability to use a long press on the highlight key as well. I’ve never personally experienced any conflicts with it, and I haven’t seen a convincing reason for its removal entirely even given the addition of the option to have a hotkey to stop/start new sessions with a separate key.

very well written, sergeant.

I wanted to add after some feedback in the medal discord, I see someone who had already given positive feedback for the removal of long press due to the nature of how they used medal. They werent a user of full session recording like I would imagine most casual users also share that experience. I feel like the majority of feedback you are going to recieve is going to be from people who chose to have long press enabled but tried to use it while using medal more like a replay buffer or shadowplay in turn having some issues with it.
I think allowing long press functionality for full session users to vod chop while having the ability to highlight on tap would be amazing to have again all on one button.

I think this a very good suggestion bring back my long press recording!!!!

thanks for the writeup and for the feedback. This change is part of a larger refactoring with the end goal to allow clipping and long recording at the same time and simplifying the hotkey system in order to expand on it. We will consider bring key holds back in when we are done with part, but I can’t promise this will happen.
in the meantime and to not disrupt your existing flow more than necessary, while also not using an additional key on a small keyboard, maybe you can try using the same hotkey but with modiIers? for example: f8 to clip, f8 + shift for long recording, ctrl + f8 for screenshots, etc.
for this part : Before the update that removed the ability to see highlights by hovering over VODs in the library, Will see if we can get this added back, good call.

Unfortunately, and I do appreciate the reply, I already use a modifier for the key to clip xD. If you guys are open to bringing back the option that is more than good enough for me. Also thanks for looking into the hover issue as well.

yeah, I understand. I will keep this thread updated with any changes we make around this behavior.
In the meantime, if you are open to discussing your use case a bit more, could you add me on discord? I am kayllab there.

I use a single button on my gamepad to trigger both. I don’t use recordings a lot but this worked quite well and I was happy with it.
Changing this without even so much as a notification was really not cool and quite disruptive for me.
