Remove 10 min clip-length limit for full session recordings#1810

Currently, clips created from full session recordings are limited to only a maximum length of 10 minutes. It’s not possible to create any clips that are longer than 10 minutes. If one attempts to create a clip that’s longer than 10 min, then the following error is displayed in the console: “app.min.js:1961 Cannot create sub clip, exceeds max duration!”

Here’s a screenrecording of the issue:

This is a massive limitation which is unnecessary and should be removed.
It doesn’t make sense that users aren’t able to create locally saved clips over 10 min.
Clips that are longer than 2/10 minutes are already automatically restricted from being uploaded by another filter, so this “Cannot create sub clip, exceeds max duration!” filter could just be deleted.

I got a solution for the current problem of clip-length limits for full session recordings:

Temporary quick fix:
The maximum clip length got increased to 20 min and users are able to edit them in the clip editor. There’s no reason that the maximum duration of clips created from full session recordings is still only 10 minutes - the limit can simply be increased from 10 to 20 minutes. That’s just one number change and can be implemented in the next update.

Complete fix:
-Remove the “Cannot create sub clip, exceeds max duration!” limit completely.
-When a clip that was created from a full session recording is longer than 20 minutes, it will only be able to open in the simplified full session recording editor, otherwise, it will open in the clip editor (just like manual clips).

A problem described by @Brandon:
“If we allow you to edit a 4hr video to a 1hr video, we need to display this in some way. We need to make it clear that you can’t bring this into the clip editor. Otherwise, the whole experience can be very confusing.”

Solution:
When a clip that was created from a full session recording is longer than 20 minutes, then the text that’s displayed when hovering over the red warning icon will change from “Video longer than 2 minutes” to either “Video longer than 2 minutes & too long for clip editor” or “Video too long for upload & clip editor”. This would clear up any confusion and provide the necessary information.

Thanks for reading, and hopefully the clip-length limit for full session recordings will be removed! (^o^)

@Sean No problem, I’m happy to help and make Medal.tv better!😁

@Galkon Could you maybe look into this issue?😄

I agree, This kinda limits the ability to USE your content, Since the current custom MKV format does not work in editors as it is technically corrupt

Any updates on this? Would be pretty easy to at least increase the clip limit for full session recordings to 20 minutes just like the regular clip limit. @Galkon @Sean @Brandon @Kayllab

@Brandon Thanks for the update, increasing the limit to 20 minutes is a good improvement.👍🏼
Couldn’t the limit be removed completely with my proposed solutions?

“When a clip that was created from a full session recording is longer than 20 minutes, it will only be able to open in the simplified full session recording editor, otherwise, it will open in the clip editor (just like manual clips).”

“When a clip that was created from a full session recording is longer than 20 minutes, then the text that’s displayed when hovering over the red warning icon will change from “Video longer than 2 minutes” to either “Video longer than 2 minutes & too long for clip editor” or “Video too long for upload & clip editor”. This would clear up any confusion and provide the necessary information.”

Wouldn’t be hard to implement, right?

It might not be too hard to implement, but we have our plates full with other things. Though it could be simple to do, it could introduce a lot of unexpected issues.

@Brandon Do you guys know how to make the clip editor work for long videos? Why is it performing so poorly and can’t handle long videos? That’s the root of many issues. There are so many editors where the length of the videos is almost irrelevant to the performance, why can’t Medal accomplish that?

It was built as a clip editor without the intention of it being able to edit super long videos. Editors are complicated and will require a lot of work to support longer videos
